FPL Chip Strategy 2026/27: When to Play Wildcard, Triple Captain, Bench Boost and Free Hit

Chip outlook for 2026/27

With premium assets like Haaland (£14.7m) and Bruno Fernandes (£10.4m) dominating ownership at 62.5% and 48% respectively, early chip deployment will separate patient managers from knee-jerkers this season.

Wildcard

Hold your first Wildcard until GW8-10. The template heavy squads at the start mean most managers will face similar problems, and knee-jerking in GW3 wastes your safety net. Use it after international breaks when injury news settles and form patterns emerge. Your second Wildcard should target the DGW run-in, typically GW32-34, when fixture swings and doubles create the biggest team value gaps. Don't waste chips fixing small problems you can solve with regular transfers.

Bench Boost

Bench Boost demands a Double Gameweek with at least 8-9 playing doubles in your squad of 15. Target the biggest DGW cluster, usually in March or April when fixture postponements pile up. Pre-build your squad over 3-4 weeks using your Wildcard and free transfers, ensuring your bench fodder (currently players like Darlow at £4.0m and Reed at £4.3m) have doubles too. Playing it randomly in a single gameweek throws away 15-20 points minimum. Patience wins here.

Triple Captain

Save Triple Captain for Haaland in a Double Gameweek, ideally against two weak defenses at home. Using it in GW1 on single fixtures is amateur hour, even with his 62.5% ownership. The difference between a 12-point haul and a 24-point haul in a DGW is season-defining. If Haaland gets injured or transfers out of the league, pivot to whoever emerges as the most explosive captaincy asset. Never use it on a defender or goalkeeper, regardless of fixtures.

Free Hit

Free Hit solves two problems: blank gameweeks where most teams don't play, or DGWs where your squad structure is wrong. Deploy it in the biggest blank GW (usually one team plays while others are in cup competitions) or in a medium DGW where you're saving Bench Boost for a bigger one. GW18-19 often features blanks worth targeting. Don't Free Hit just because you have a red arrow; use it when the fixture calendar creates genuine template breaks.
